15TH   NATIONAL YOUTH FESTIVAL -   BHUBNESHWAR

 

15th   National Youth Festival 2010  was organized jointly by Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports, Govt. of India, Govt. of  Orissa,  Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan and  NSS from 8th  to 12th January, 2010 at  Bhubneshwar, Orissa. The motto of the festival was “Celebrating Diversity”.  During the Festival,   NYKS   organised   activities such as   Yuva Kriti, Young Artist Camps, Cultural Evening, Food Festival, Kavi Samelan Rock Band and Adventure Programme.  Event wise report   of   activities is as under:

 

1.         Yuva Kriti

 

Yuva Kriti has become a regular feature of National Youth Festival.  Initially, it was started with an objective to provide a platform to the young artisans, who have been trained through NYKs Vocational Training Programme, to demonstrate their skills at a national forum.  But gradually it has been shaping as a major forum where the young artisans not only demonstrate their traditional artifacts but learn from each other the various means of self-employment avenues and a platform for developing market linkages.  It has opened new vistas of entrepreneurship opportunities in the rural areas. This year event was organised at   Exhibition Ground,  Bhubneshwar.  The exhibition was designed to provide 200 stalls. The Yuva Kriti was inaugurated by Shri  M.S. Gill Hon’ble Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India.  During the exhibition, various dignitaries visited the stalls and interacted the young artisans.  This   pubic participation was tremendous. 

 

2.         Food  Festival

 

Food Festival was  organised  at   Exhibition Ground, Bhubneshwar  from 8th  to 12th January,  2010. This event highlighted the richness and diversity of Indian cuisine and gives a rare opportunity for visitors to enjoy the sumptuousness of Indian food. The popular and famous cuisines from all over the country were invited. The Food Festival show cased the important cuisines of India and those were available at a reasonable price to the visitors.

 

3          The Young Artist Camp

 

The Young Artist Camp was held as part of the National Youth Festival for three days from 9th to 11th January, 2010 at   Ekamra Haat, near Exhibition Grounds, Bhubneshwar .  The objective of the camp was to bring together the Youth of various culture, language, religion and tradition in a common forum and use their common creative talent of fine arts to demonstrate their creativeness and use them as a tool for propagating the essence of  National Integration.

 

 

4.            Competitive Section

 

During the 15th NYF 2010, 18  Competitive  Events   were  conducted  at different  auditoria  of   Bhubneshwar  from  to 9th  to  11th January.   Competitions among the participants were held under the categories of  Classical Dance (Manipuri, Bharat Natyam, Kuchipudi, Kathak, Odissi); Classical Vocal/instrumental (Carnatic, Hindustani, Harmonium, Mridungam, Flute, Veena, Sitar, Guitar, Tabla); Folk Song, Folk Dance, One Act Play & Elocution.

5          Non  -  Competitive -  under this head   following  activities  were  organised

 i)  FOLK DANCES OF INDIA

The National Youth Festival not only provided avenue for the established and popular cultural art forms, but also provided a platform to folk, dying and less popular art forms of the country. The lesser known folk dances of smaller ethnic, tribal or a region are given this national recognition through participation in the Indian Cultural Kaleidoscope. These teams participated in Non Competitive Category of the Festival.

This stage was also shared with outstanding performances by the state competitive teams especially of folk dances after they have competed in their event. The non-competitive stages were set up in three different corners of the city to give it wide exposure and opportunity for close interaction with the city populace. 

ii)  ROCK BAND CONCERT

This is for the first time that Rock Band show was included in NYF. This was done after seeing its huge success in the recently concluded North East Festival at Kohima. Rock Band Shows are extremely popular amongst the youth all over the country and by including this in NYF it was expected to give a new platform to Rock Bands teams from the north east. The rock bands namely ELEVENTH HOUR from Meghalaya, CRUCIFIX from Mizoram, DIGITAL SUICIDE from Assam, OFF from Nagaland, DABANAL from Tripura performed at  Exhibition Ground   from    8th to 11th  January 2010.

            

iii)  HASYA KAVI SAMMELAN

Another very popular event of the NYF was Kavi Sammelan. This year it was amongst the best Kavi Sammelan focused on humour. None other than Shri Surendra Sharma who has epitomized the art of laughter which is satirical and responsible humour was invited – with his team of famous ‘hasya kavis’. They present   Hasya Kavi Sammelan on 11th January, 2010 at Utkal Mandap. A few young and established poets of Oriya language also participated.

 iv) SPECIAL CULTURAL EVENING

Special cultural evenings were organized to give opportunity to the participants and local enthusiasts to see and hear the eminent cultural performers, singers, and people with exclusive talent, celebrities of whom we have often heard. The artists were invited from other parts of the country and have proved to be very popular.  These performances not only entertain but also act as a source of encouragement to the budding artists who would gather in the Festival from all over the country. These evenings were organized  at  Kalinga Stadium on 9th, 10th and  11th  of  January – 2010 by Hans Raj Hans, Babul Supriyo and  
Usha Uthup.

       ADVENTURE

Adventure is one of the most popular events of the NYF. Old and young with the spirit of Adventure gather to try their hands on. This is an interactive and participative event and has assumed major significance. The Tenzing Norgay Adventure Camp of Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan which organizes adventure and nature appreciation activities for the youth manages activities with their technical expertise and experience. The activities which were organised  under this  event   are: Parasailing, Hot Air  Ballooning, Flying Fox, Artificial Rock Wall, Monkey Crawl, Rappelling, Zorbing, Spider Web, Jummaring, Burma bridge, etc. All these  activities  were  organised  at    OSAP 7th Battalion Ground from 9th to 12th January 2010

ADOLESCENT DEVELOPMENT CAMP


Adolescent is an impressionable age and the National Youth Festival is a forum which gives them an exposure of mini-India, its social richness and diversity. The activities and programmes are designed to develop in them positive life skills and conflict resolution tools. It also gives them a sense of pride and recognition to their thoughts and aspirations. 200 adolescents were invited from Orissa and neighboring states to participate in myriad activities which will give them exposure and confidence.  The  activities like Career Day (9th  January 2010),  Life Skills Day (10th  January 2010) and  Theatre Workshop Day (12th  January 2010)  were undertaken. The  Venue  of the programme was at   School of Management Auditorium, KIIT University ,Campus,  Bhubneshwar Orissa.

                                                                                                        
SAND ART

For the very first time Sand Art creations was displayed in Exhibition ground by famous Sand Art Artists like Shri Sudarshan Patnaik. This art form is very special and unique to the state of Orissa. It was a sure delight for visitors to see and appreciate the art which has won accolades the world over. A special enclosure was made for acknowledging this very rich art form. It will be on display at the Exhibition Ground on all the days.
